2-at-a-time Half-Rectangle Triangle

1:2 Ratio

Recently Half Rectangle Triangles (HRT) have been a big hit at Farmer’s Daughters Quilts!

To get started we need to find out how big to cut your rectangles to create HRT units, 2 at a time.  The method below will provide an oversized HRT so that you can trim to the perfect size:

To create Right Half Rectangle Triangle Units:

  1. From the top left to the bottom right, draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of one of the rectangles.
  2. Place two rectangles right sides together. Now rotate the top rectangle so that the upper left corner matches the bottom rectangle’s upper right corner and the top rectangle’s lower right corner matches the bottom rectangle’s lower left corner.
  3. Sew a ¼” seam on both sides of your drawn line.
  4. Cut along the diagonal line creating 2 Right HRT units. Press each seam towards the dark fabric.
  5. Trim to the size listed in the middle column “Trimmed HRT Size”.
IMPORTANT: When trimming your triangle, the seam line will not be in the exact corner of the rectangle. Instead it should be 1/8" from the edge.
